Description:
Abstract:
Polygons roughly digitized (at a scale of 1:5,500) over the bathymetry points and aerial photograph to show the tidal height strata. Created by a person familiar with the area (on the ground and the GIS files) and snapped to other polygons so that there is no area of overlap. Layer intended for a general map of bay-wide tidal height and not for point accuracy. Map used in a presentation for the general public to show the projects classification of tidal height strata.
Purpose:
SEACOR, Shellfish and Estuarine Assessment of Coastal Oregon, a focused project within Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), documenting the distribution and abundance of recreationally important bay clam species. The targeted clam species are Tresus capax (Gaper), Saxidomus gigantea (Butter), Protothaca staminea (Native Littleneck) and Clinocardium nuttallii (Cockle). Our sampling design was two tiered: 1) a superficial and extensive Rapid Assessment Method (RAM), with evenly spaced sampling to cover all extents of each tide flat and 2) a thorough and limited Detailed Assessment Method (DAM), with randomly generated points within known bivalve habitat. Habitat classification and environmental and biological variables that could be determined by visual observation were recorded for a 1 m2 quadrat ('XYEnvironmental_factors). For DAM a 1 m2 quadrat was dug down to 35 cm making a CORE and was visually assessed for target species (biometrics are found in the 'XYExtracted_Clams' layer). SEACOR is funded by recreational shellfish license fees and captures a snapshot of the status of Oregon's estuarine resources for baseline data and for comparison to past (ODFW 1970's raccoon reports) and future studies. The SEACOR project initially targeted intertidal flats of the lower Coos Bay Estuary during 2008-2009. All results from this study are presented in a formal ODFW report and further information can be found at <http://www.dfw.state.or.us/mrp/shellfish/Seacor/index.asp>.
